Two numbers in, one out

Pace, time and distance are one relationship: time equals distance times pace. Pick what you want to find - pace, finish time or distance - fill in the other two, and the calculator solves for the third. Race presets fill in the exact distance for you, including the half marathon at 13.109 miles, exactly half of 42.195 km.

Miles and kilometers, the same answer

Every calculation runs in meters and seconds and is converted only when it is shown, using the exact international mile. That is why a pace typed per mile and the same pace per kilometer give the same finish time to the second, and why the unit switch converts what you typed instead of reinterpreting it.

Splits you can actually run to

Open the splits table for the elapsed time at every mile or kilometer, at an even pace. The splits use the rounded pace - the one on your wristband - so they add up to a finish at or just under your goal. An even pace is also the honest baseline: most runners who beat their goal time run the second half a little faster than the first, and almost nobody who starts too fast gets the time back later.

For runners in the US

Most US road races are measured in kilometers - the 5K, the 10K, the Peachtree on the Fourth of July - while almost every American runner thinks in minutes per mile. That mismatch is why this calculator always shows both, whichever unit you type in: the race is 6.21 miles, the watch splits on the mile, and the finish clock does not care which one you used to plan.

Questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by your distance. 55 minutes over 6.21 miles is 8.85 minutes per mile, which is 8 minutes and 51 seconds - the fraction of a minute has to be multiplied by 60, not read as seconds. That last step is where hand calculations usually go wrong.

Why is the pace rounded down?

Because a pace is a promise. 4:30 for a marathon is 10:17.9 per mile; the calculator shows 10:17, and holding 10:17 finishes a few seconds early. Showing 10:18 would finish a few seconds late and miss the goal you planned for.

My GPS watch says I ran farther than the race distance. Who is right?

Usually the course. Certified courses are measured along the shortest possible line through every turn, and nobody runs that line perfectly; GPS also wanders. Plan your pace on the official distance and expect the watch to read a little long.
